Equivalencies and Transfer Credit Information

AP / CLEP / IB Credit

Some students may earn UK Core credit based on examinations taken in high school such as through the Advanced Placement Program (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). The Office of the Registrar provides information for these and other prior learning assessments on their website at https://registrar.uky.edu/credit-examination.

Transfer Credit

The Transfer Admissions office also works with students regarding transfer equivalency credit for all coursework taken at a different institution, including dual credit courses. Information on transfer equivalency or transfer credit can be found at https://admission.uky.edu/transfer/equivalencies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I track my progress on UK Core requirements?

The  degree audit system in myUK GPS maintains the "official" record of the general education requirements that a student has fulfilled. In addition, the degree audit provides the student an opportunity to evaluate where they stand regarding how their completed courses (and transfer courses, if applicable) apply to their degree program and any declared minors. MyUK GPS allows students to plan future courses and evaluate how their completed coursework may even apply toward other degree programs and minors if they are interested in a double major, dual degree and/or a minor.

See a guide on how to access myUK GPS here.

Are all students required to participate in UK Core?

UK Core officially began with students that entered UK in the Fall 2011 semester. All students must complete 30 hours in the UK Core through coursework completed at UK, applicable transfer coursework, AP credit or a combination thereof.

Can a course taken at another institution be used to fullfill a UK Core requirement?

Yes. As is the case with AP credit, when academic credit is assigned for a course taken at another institution, that course is "linked" with a UK course. Any UK Core requirement fulfilled by that UK course is also fulfilled by the transferred course. As always, please contact your academic advisor regarding specific questions.

If I earn an Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS) or bachelor's degree from a college or university, what UK requirements do I meet?

Students who transfer to UK with an AA, AS or a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution will have earned credit for all UK Core requirements. These students will also show completion of the foreign language requirement as a result of earning one of these degrees. Higher level foreign language requirements may be required based upon the major/college chosen.
