History of UK Core
UK Core and its Roots
Beginning with a 2004 review of the University Studies Program, UK's then-general education curriculum, the University Senate began a lengthy and thoughtful conversation about its core curriculum. After approving a set of Design Principles for a revised curriculum, in March 2008, the former University Senate and the provost jointly established a General Education Reform Steering Committee, whose recommended Learning Outcomes and Curricular Framework were approved by the former University Senate at its December 8, 2008 meeting.

Collaborating to Build Foundational Knowledge
The learning outcomes adopted by the former University Senate articulated the major components of a curricular framework for general education and the distribution of course work within each segment of that framework. General education, in its then-new conception, was and still is meant to be integrated throughout the four years of study. The core courses are designed to create a foundation. The Office of the Provost and other members of the faculty, staff and student community work together in order to ensure that courses balance between rigorous disciplinary content and the central learning outcomes of UK Core.
